Liam Gillis Looks Ahead to the New TVPL Season

Burghfield FC28 Aug 2024 - 06:30

New Men’s First Team Manager, Liam Gillis, has been looking ahead to the new season and reflecting on his first few weeks in charge.

With the new Thames Valley Premier League season due to kick-off on Wednesday (28th Aug), Liam has been looking forward to getting underway and discussing his expectations for the upcoming season.

“Pre-season has been as good as we could have hoped so we are excited to get going” Liam said.

“I'm expecting the most competitive Thames Valley Premier League for a long, long time. I don't think there will be any runaway winners this year. The new teams coming in will all be competitive so I can see it being very open.”

Liam took charge of the team at the beginning of August, following the decision by previous manager, Steve Melledew, to step down from the role. Liam said: “It’s been a whirlwind first few weeks, and a change that came very suddenly, but one which I and the whole group have embraced. My phone has been busier than ever, that's for sure.

“There are some big shoes to fill in taking over from the most successful manager in our club’s history, but Mellers has left on great terms and with a squad still buzzing from the cup double last season.”

There have been a few changes to the squad ahead of the new season, but with some new faces joining the group we begin the season full of confidence. Speaking about the squad, Liam added: “A few have moved on to pastures new, but the majority of last season’s squad have stayed.

“We've added a few really exciting young players along with a couple of the lads I had in the Sunday side last season. On top of that we have a great team of coaches so we are in solid shape.”

We begin the new Thames Valley Premier League campaign with a tough home fixture against Finchampstead - a side we faced twice in a week at the back-end of last season.

“It will be 3 competitive games in a row against Finchampstead, following on from last season” Liam said. “Both teams know each other well having followed each other up the leagues and both challenging at the top end of the Premier Division in the last few years.”

We follow-up the game against Finchampstead with the visit of Newbury on Saturday (31st Aug) and then a trip to Tadley Calleva the following Wednesday (4th Sep).

Speaking about the aims for the upcoming season, Liam added: “For us, and not to be too cliché, we'll be taking it a game at a time. We will go into every fixture looking for 3 points and see where that leaves us at the end of the season. But we have as much chance as anyone to be challenging on all fronts once again.”
