Club Statement: Men's Saturday First Team Manager

Club Statement: Men's Saturday First Team Manager

Burghfield FC5 Aug 2024 - 12:15

We can confirm Liam Gillis has been appointed our new Men’s First Team Manager following the decision by Steve Melledew to step down from the role.

Due to ongoing commitments away from football, the club has accepted the resignation of Steve Melledew as Men’s First Team Manager, with immediate effect. We appreciate and thank Steve for his honesty and transparency that he is unfortunately unable to fully commit the time required to manage the team.

Mellers first took charge of the Men’s First Team in April 2020, leading them to four consecutive top four finishes in the Thames Valley Premier League Premier Division - the highest league finishes in our history - including a runners-up finish in the 2021/22 season.

A progressive four years in charge culminated in a historic cup double for the club, winning the Berks & Bucks Charles Twelftree Trophy in March and then lifting the Thames Valley Premier League BTC Senior Cup at Reading FC’s Select Car Leasing Stadium in May.

Steve leaves as a champion, and we thank him for his contribution to our men’s set-up.

We are pleased to confirm Steve will continue with his role as coach of our current U16’s age group.

Following Steve Melledew’s departure, we are delighted to announce Liam Gillis has been appointed as our new Men’s First Team Manager.

Liam has a long history with the club spanning over 20 years as a player, youth coach and open-age manager.

Most recently Liam has had a successful spell managing our Men’s Sunday First Team, winning the Berks & Bucks Sunday Senior Cup during the 2022/23 season, finishing as runners-up in the Reading & District Sunday League Premier Division last season and previously leading the team to the last 16 of the prestigious FA Sunday Cup.

Everyone at the club wishes Liam all the best as he takes on this new role.

A further update on our Men’s Sunday Management structure will be announced in due course.
